My favorite demonstration in the MATLAB help is the Loma Prieta Earthquake demonstration. When learning a new programming language it can be difficult to see the purpose of all of the minute commands or to see any real world applications. This demonstration shows how MATLAB can be used to graphically display raw data collected from an instrument. The ability to graph the motion of the ground and the speed of that motion during an earthquake really makes an impact.
